Lagosians woke up to a new chapter in the state’s legislative history as Mojisola Meranda assumed office as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly. Her appointment, which followed the impeachment of Mudashiru Obasa, marks a turning point for the Assembly.
Representing Apapa Constituency I, Meranda has been a steadfast lawmaker since 2015. With her new position, she pledges to champion laws that directly improve the lives of Lagos residents. “This role is an opportunity to deepen legislative impact and deliver meaningful development for Lagosians,” Meranda said during her acceptance speech.
Born on August 16, 1980, into the prominent Ojora royal family, Meranda’s leadership journey is deeply rooted in her heritage. Her father, the late Chief T.A. Lawal Akapo, was a legislator who later became the Ojora of Lagos.
Leadership with a Rich Legacy
Meranda is the first female Speaker in the Assembly in over a decade. A product of Lagos State University and the University of Lagos, she holds a degree in Public Administration and has excelled in both public and private sectors. Before her legislative career, she served as a procurement manager and worked as a personal assistant in the Lagos State government.
Her leadership style is underscored by tangible results. She has championed amendments to outdated laws and introduced impactful constituency projects. From providing water facilities and equipping schools to offering support for petty traders and widows, her initiatives have touched countless lives.
Advocating for Women and Challenging Norms
Meranda is one of just four women in the 40-member Lagos Assembly. She has consistently advocated for greater female representation in politics, challenging stereotypes about women in leadership. “Women can lead effectively and equally. We bring strength and resilience to the table,” she said in an interview.
As Chief Whip of the ninth Assembly, she was instrumental in driving legislative processes. Her unanimous selection as Speaker on January 13, 2025, is a testament to her colleagues’ confidence in her leadership.
The Road Ahead for Lagosians
Meranda’s tenure is expected to bring reforms aimed at improving governance and the quality of life in Lagos. Residents anticipate legislative actions addressing critical issues like education, healthcare, and infrastructure.
