From Engineer to Monarch: The Story of Alaafin Abimbola Owoade

Oyo State witnessed a historic moment as Governor Seyi Makinde presented the Staff of Office to Alaafin Abimbola Owoade, marking a new era for the ancient kingdom. The ceremony, held at the governor’s office in Ibadan, was filled with cultural pride and excitement.

The new Alaafin’s appointment follows the passing of Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, who ruled for over 50 years. Governor Makinde described the occasion as a step toward preserving Oyo’s rich traditions while fostering growth and unity.

In his remarks, Makinde said, “We are confident that Oba Owoade will lead with wisdom, integrity, and a strong commitment to unity.” The governor highlighted the monarch’s pivotal role as a custodian of Oyo’s heritage and a leader poised to advance the kingdom.

A Leader with Vision

Alaafin Abimbola Owoade, 47, brings a wealth of experience from his career as an entrepreneur and philanthropist. Born into the royal Owoade-Agunloye family in Oyo, he studied mechanical engineering at renowned institutions in Nigeria and the United Kingdom. His professional journey spans engineering, banking, and real estate, reflecting a commitment to excellence and innovation.

In his acceptance speech, the monarch pledged to prioritize the welfare of his people. “I will devote myself to the advancement and prosperity of the Oyo Kingdom while ensuring our traditions endure,” he said. His vision includes cultural preservation, youth empowerment, and economic growth, signaling a transformative reign for the kingdom.

A Rich Cultural Legacy

The presentation ceremony was steeped in tradition, featuring prayers from Christian, Islamic, and traditional clerics. Vibrant music and performances showcased the pride of the Oyo people, who celebrated their new leader. The event brought together traditional rulers, government officials, and Oyo residents in a unified display of joy and anticipation.

The Alaafin’s journey to the throne reflects resilience and dedication. A graduate of Baptist High School, Saki, Owoade later pursued advanced engineering studies in the UK. He holds certifications in project management and has led a successful real estate business in Canada.

Looking Ahead

As Oyo’s 46th Alaafin, Owoade faces the challenge of continuing the legacy of his predecessor while addressing modern needs. His reign is expected to focus on empowering the youth, revitalizing local industries, and fostering unity across the kingdom.

The Oyo State government announced that the coronation date will be set after consultations with traditional stakeholders. Residents and dignitaries eagerly await the grand occasion, which promises to further cement Oyo’s status as a center of cultural and historical significance.
