House Of Reps In Nigeria To Give Up 50% Of Salary To Ease Economic Crisis

In an unprecedented move, members of the House of Representatives have unanimously agreed to slash their salaries by 50% for six months to support Nigerians facing economic hardship and food insecurity.

This decision demonstrates their commitment to solidarity with the citizens and willingness to make sacrifices for the greater good.

The motion, initially proposed by Rep Isiaka Ayokunle, called for abandoning planned nationwide protests in favor of dialogue with the government.

However, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Okezie Kalu took it a step further by suggesting an amendment to contribute 50% of their N600,000 monthly salaries to assist the government in addressing the rising cost of food.

“I propose that we contribute 50% of our salaries to support the government in addressing the economic hardship and food insecurity in the country,” Kalu said.

This amendment was met with unanimous approval from the House, resulting in a monthly sacrifice of N108 million from the 360 lawmakers over the next six months.

This collective effort aims to alleviate the current economic difficulties and food insecurity in Nigeria, showcasing the lawmakers’ dedication to the welfare of their constituents. As Rep Ayokunle noted, “We must lead by example and show that we are committed to the well-being of our people.”

This historic decision sets a precedent for future leadership and demonstrates the power of collective action in times of crisis.
