How Mele Kyari Rose From Almajiri Pupil to CEO of NNPC Ltd

Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Ltd, has shared a deeply emotional reflection on his 60th birthday. In a poignant message, he described his journey from a humble Almajiri school student to leading Africa’s largest energy company as nothing short of miraculous.

Kyari, born on January 8, 1965, expressed gratitude for the opportunities Nigeria has afforded him. He also acknowledged the sacrifices made by his family and the grace of Allah in shaping his life. “Only the grace of Allah can account for my journey,” he said in a social media post.

Appointed by former President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019, Kyari has spent over three decades at NNPC, witnessing its transformation into a limited liability company. Under his leadership, NNPC navigated challenging energy transitions and industry reforms.

A Life of Service and Sacrifice

Kyari’s heartfelt tribute included recognition of his family, mentors, and colleagues. He admitted to the sacrifices his family endured during his career, often prioritizing national service over personal moments. “Their unwavering support has been the backbone of my journey,” he noted.

Reflecting on his journey, Kyari described it as a blend of trials and triumphs. “Pain and joy, failures and successes—this milestone is a turning point,” he said. Kyari reaffirmed his commitment to serving Nigeria with greater dedication in the years ahead.

A Legacy of Leadership

Kyari also thanked Presidents Muhammadu Buhari and Bola Ahmed Tinubu for trusting him with pivotal roles. He emphasized his determination to inspire others through his life story, calling for forgiveness from those he may have unintentionally hurt along the way.

As he embarks on this new chapter, Kyari remains focused on his vision for Nigeria’s energy sector. “This milestone is not the end but a new beginning,” he declared.

Mele Kyari’s story resonates as an inspiring tale of resilience, dedication, and faith. His journey reflects the potential of ordinary Nigerians to achieve extraordinary feats through hard work and grace.
