Renowned Kenyan human rights activist Boniface Mwangi walked free after a night in police custody. His arrest sparked outrage among supporters demanding his release.
Mwangi’s wife, Njeri, described his dawn abduction by six masked individuals from their Machakos County home. “They allowed him to dress up and then walked him out,” she recounted.
Police detained Mwangi for allegedly inciting violence at Nairobi’s Standard Chartered marathon protest. He had urged Kenyans to demand President William Ruto’s resignation using hashtags #RutoMustGo and #OccupyStanChart.
“Stay calm, peaceful and have fun!” Mwangi posted before his arrest. His call to action followed growing discontent over rising living costs and alleged police brutality.

Ruto’s presidency has faced mass protests since June. He dropped tax increase plans and brought opposition parties into government to quell anger.
Mwangi’s lawyer condemned the detention as “an abuse of power.” This isn’t Mwangi’s first arrest; he’s repeatedly faced detention for campaigning.
Kenyan authorities released Mwangi without charges. His activism continues, fueled by commitment to human rights and democratic freedoms.
