Kudirat kekere – Ekun Seeks Confirmation As Nation’s Chief Justice

Nigeria’s acting Chief Justice, Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, stood before the Senate today, seeking confirmation as the nation’s substantive Chief Justice.

President Bola Tinubu’s nomination, presented by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, cited Section 231(1) of the Nigerian Constitution, emphasizing the National Judicial Council’s recommendation.

During her screening, Justice Kekere-Ekun vowed to tackle corruption head-on. “I have absolutely no tolerance for corruption within the judiciary,” she emphasized.
She also addressed pre-election matters, stating, “All such cases will conclude at the Court of Appeal, ensuring timely resolution and upholding the rule of law.”

Kekere-Ekun’s stance resonated with lawmakers, reflecting her commitment to judicial integrity and efficiency.

If confirmed, she will become Nigeria’s 23rd substantive Chief Justice and the second female to hold this esteemed position.
The Senate’s deliberation on her nomination follows her acting tenure since August, succeeding retired Justice Olukayode Ariwoola.

President Tinubu urged prompt consideration and approval, trusting in the Senate’s diligence.
As Nigeria’s judicial landscape evolves, Justice Kekere-Ekun’s leadership promises a renewed focus on transparency and accountability.
