A fierce storm is brewing in Nigeria’s labour landscape, as the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and its allies rally together to challenge the “unjust” detention of their president, Joe Ajaero.
The police have summoned Ajaero over a slew of allegations, including terrorism financing and treasonable felony, sparking widespread outrage and accusations of political persecution.
In a powerful display of solidarity, major unions like the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), National Union of Railway Workers (NUR), and Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) have vowed to down tools and embark on an indefinite strike if Ajaero is detained. This united front sends a resounding message: the labour movement will not be intimidated or silenced.

As tensions escalate, the NLC has issued a rallying cry to its members, civil society allies, and the general public to stand in solidarity against what they see as a blatant attempt to stifle their voice.
With the fate of Ajaero and the future of the labour movement hanging precariously in the balance, one thing is clear, the consequences of this confrontation will be far-reaching and profound.
