Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has dismissed claims he is pursuing a governorship bid, instead emphasizing his dedication to strengthening the ruling party.
Speaking after Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu presented Lagos’ N3.01 trillion 2025 budget on Thursday, Obasa said his focus remains on mobilizing grassroots support. “My commitment is to build the party under the Mandate platform, not personal ambitions,” he said.
Obasa refuted allegations linking him to high-profile Lagos families to bolster his credentials. “I don’t need local validity to contest; my track record and Agege roots are enough if I decide to run,” he asserted.

The budget, tagged the “Budget of Sustainability,” allocates N1.24 trillion (41%) to recurrent expenditure and N1.77 trillion (59%) to capital projects. Sanwo-Olu stated that total revenue is projected at N2.6 trillion, with a deficit of N409 billion.
Obasa commended the budget, acknowledging the economic challenges faced by Nigerians but urging optimism as President Bola Tinubu’s policies aim to stabilize the nation.
Political Landscape Heats Up
As Lagos looks toward 2027, Obasa joins the growing list of potential candidates, including Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat, Senator Tokunbo Abiru, and former House Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila.
Reports highlight Obasa’s grassroots influence and alignment with the Mandate Group as significant strengths. While names like Abiru and Gbajabiamila boast corporate and national ties, analysts note Obasa’s community connections position him as a formidable contender.
