Lagos Deputy Governor Stresses Media’s Role in Driving Inclusive Governance

Lagos State Deputy Governor, Obafemi Hamzat, has highlighted the pivotal role of the media in fostering governance and sustainable development. Speaking at a Breakfast Chat with journalists, Hamzat described the press as “nation builders,” vital for shaping public perception and fostering citizen engagement.

“The media’s role transcends reporting; they shape narratives, influence public opinion, and drive national development,” Hamzat said. He called for balanced reporting, urging journalists to focus on developmental issues while maintaining constructive criticism.

Hamzat stressed the importance of collaboration, particularly in communicating government initiatives to tackle Lagos’ pressing challenges. “Lagos faces rising water levels, extreme rainfall, and heat. Decisions like urban renewal aren’t arbitrary but necessary precautions for our city’s future,” he explained.

Special Adviser to the Governor, Dr. Afolabi Tajudeen, also emphasised the government’s commitment to civic engagement. Tajudeen detailed the state’s efforts to boost social welfare, including the disbursement of over N700 million to support 2,344 residents.

“The Sanwo-Olu Listens Programme has provided financial aid for health expenses, housing, business needs, and school fees,” Tajudeen revealed. He added that initiatives like voters’ education and legislative transparency are also central to the administration’s strategy to empower citizens.

The Breakfast Chat underlined the government’s appeal for a stronger partnership with the media. Hamzat reiterated that accurate and balanced reporting is essential to gaining public support for policies designed to secure Lagos’ future.
