Minister Of Sports,Owan Enoh , Announces New Date For National Youth Games

In a strategic move to avoid logistical conflicts with the upcoming Edo State gubernatorial elections, the Minister for Sports Development, John Owan Enoh, has announced a new commencement date for the 8th edition of the National Youth Games.

The event, which promises to showcase the talents of Nigeria’s young athletes, will now kick off on September 9, 2024, instead of the initial date of September 10.

This decision was made to prevent potential disruptions to the games, as the Edo State elections scheduled for September 21 would have resulted in a total lockdown and restriction of movement, affecting contingents from the South-West who would be traveling through the state.

By rescheduling the event, the Ministry of Sports Development has ensured a seamless and hitch-free experience for all participants.

During the Joint Technical Committee Meeting at the Steven Keshi International Stadium in Asaba, Okeke, Director of Grassroots Sports Development, represented the Minister and outlined the revised plans for the National Youth Games.

The zonal eliminations will now take place from August 28 to September 1, while online registration will be available from August 24 to 28.

The Minister expressed his gratitude to the Delta State Government for its unwavering commitment to cadet sports development, which has been instrumental in nurturing the talents of young Nigerian athletes.

He also appealed for swift attention to minor renovation work needed at the facilities to ensure a world-class experience for all participants.

The National Youth Games, scheduled to take place at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, will feature athletes not older than 15 years competing in 36 sports.

As Delta State aims to defend its title won in the last edition, the stage is set for an electrifying display of youth athletic prowess.
