Nigeria Collaborates With Vaccine Alliance To Combat Cholera

Nigeria has joined forces with the Vaccine Alliance, Gavi, to secure urgent vaccine donations in preparation for potential shortages amidst the escalating cholera cases nationwide.

Dr. Sania Nishtar, the Chief Executive Officer of Gavi, expressed deep concern about the cholera outbreak in Nigeria and affirmed the organization’s readiness to assist the country in its response.

“Deeply concerned about the ongoing cholera outbreak in Nigeria. @Gavi and partners are closely monitoring the cholera outbreak and stand ready to support the government in quickly responding, including requesting emergency vaccine doses.

“The global cholera stockpile, which is funded by Gavi, is currently fully replenished and ready to help contain outbreaks and protect those at highest risk.”

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) announced the establishment of the Emergency Operation Centre (EOC) on Monday to address the escalating cases in the country.

Dr. Jide Idris, the Director-General of the NCDC, highlighted that the EOC would serve as the central coordination hub for the response efforts nationwide.

“It will ensure efficient deployment of needed resources, strengthen surveillance and diagnostic capacity and capabilities, enhance case management, training, and intensify public awareness and community engagement activities,” Idris emphasized.

Experts conducting the risk assessment have identified Nigeria as being at high risk of increased transmission and impact, underscoring the urgency of collaborative efforts to combat the cholera surge.
