Nigeria Prioritises Climate-Smart Agriculture for Food Security, Says President Tinubu

Nigeria is taking decisive steps toward sustainable development, aiming to secure food resources and reduce environmental damage. President Bola Tinubu reaffirmed the country’s commitment to climate-smart agricultural practices during his address at Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week.

Speaking on Wednesday, Tinubu emphasised that these initiatives align with Nigeria’s responsibility to lead Africa’s energy transition. “We must innovate, collaborate, and decide decisively as a global community,” he stated, stressing the country’s role in shaping a greener future.

Nigeria, the most populous African nation, is taking bold actions to address climate change. “We have embraced sustainability and are addressing local realities through three main pillars: energy transition, climate resilience, and sustainable development,” said Tinubu.

He outlined Nigeria’s plan to employ climate-smart agriculture to improve food security while mitigating environmental impacts. The country has also rolled out policies such as the National Clean Cooking Gas Policy, aimed at promoting cleaner energy for socio-economic development.

Nigeria is advancing its energy transition, diversifying away from fossil fuels. With a target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2060, the country is investing in green infrastructure like compressed natural gas and electric vehicles. “We are committed to this transition, and we invite global collaboration,” the president stated.

Tinubu highlighted Nigeria’s pioneering role in financing green projects through Sovereign Green Bonds, with the third issuance already underway. He urged investors to collaborate in promoting sustainable development, ensuring the country’s efforts are supported globally.

Acknowledging environmental challenges like deforestation, desertification, and the shrinking Lake Chad, Tinubu stressed the importance of international partnerships. “For Africa’s green economy, we need sustainable practices in all sectors,” he emphasized, calling for collective action to tackle shared global challenges.

Tinubu also reiterated the need for technological innovation, mentioning Nigeria’s adoption of advanced technologies in clean energy, agriculture, and waste management. He called for global unity to meet Sustainable Development Goals and mitigate climate change’s impact.
