Nigeria’s university system braces for disruption as the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) embark on an indefinite strike, starting tomorrow, Monday.
The unions, representing over 50,000 workers, demand payment of withheld four-month salaries, improved remuneration, and implementation of 2009 agreements.
“We have exercised considerable and prolonged patience,” said union leaders. Previous negotiations yielded no results.

SSANU National President Mohammed Ibrahim and NASU General Secretary Prince Peters Adeyemi directed members to hold campus congresses on Monday, initiating a “comprehensive and total strike action.” All federal and state-owned universities and inter-university centers will be affected.
Students and academic and administrative operations will feel the impact. This strike underscores longstanding tensions between university staff and the government.
With negotiations stalled, Nigeria’s higher education faces uncertainty.
