Nigeria’s VP Returns After UNGA, Focuses On Independence Celebrations

Vice President Kashim Shettima returned to Abuja on Sunday, September 29, 2024, after representing President Bola Tinubu at the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.

During the assembly, President Tinubu urged world leaders to prioritize debt forgiveness for Nigeria and other developing nations. He emphasized the need for multilateral institutions to reconsider the debt burden hindering economic progress in these countries.

Shettima presented Nigeria’s National Statement at the General Debate, engaging in bilateral meetings and sideline events. He reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening international partnerships, particularly with the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States.

The Vice President will join President Tinubu for Nigeria’s 64th Independence anniversary celebrations. This milestone marks a significant moment for the nation, reflecting on its journey and looking toward the future.

Recent developments have seen Nigeria receiving support from international organizations. The Gates Foundation donated $600,000 in relief funds, while ExxonMobil pledged a $10 billion investment in Nigeria’s oil sector.

President Tinubu’s call for debt forgiveness resonates with Nigeria’s economic goals. As Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States, he stressed the importance of cooperation and equality among member states.

Shettima’s participation in the UNGA highlighted Nigeria’s dedication to global cooperation and solidarity. His statement at the OACPS meeting emphasized the nation’s commitment to addressing pressing national concerns while fostering stronger international relationships.
