NPHCDA Sets October 8 For Mpox Vaccination, Targets High -Risk Groups

The National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) has announced that the mpox vaccination program will commence on October 8, 2024, with a targeted approach focusing on high-risk groups.

The agency’s Head of Public Relations, Remi Adeleke, revealed that the vaccine deployment will begin from October 3 to 6, 2024, following regulatory procedures.

Adeleke stated, “The target population is close contacts of mpox cases, health workers, and persons with low immune status.”

The vaccination strategy involves identifying two sites per state, with fixed posts and special teams targeting communities where necessary.

The initial vaccine supply consists of 9,980 doses, which will be distributed evenly across five states, with a total population of 4,750 persons to receive two doses each, 28 days apart. Additional doses are expected from the Africa CDC planned donation.

The mpox outbreak has affected 19 states and the FCT, with 48 confirmed cases out of 868 suspected cases.

The NPHCDA’s vaccination program aims to mitigate the spread of the disease among high-risk groups.
