Monday Okpebholo was inaugurated as the new governor of Edo State on November 12, 2024, at a ceremony held at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City. His swearing-in marks the end of Godwin Obaseki’s eight-year tenure as governor.
Okpebholo, who ran under the All Progressives Congress (APC), triumphed in the September 2024 election, defeating the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Ighodalo, with 291,667 votes to Ighodalo’s 247,274.
The ceremony was attended by key political figures, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, who represented President Bola Tinubu, and former governor Adams Oshiomhole. Okpebholo was sworn in alongside his deputy, Dennis Idahosa, at around 12:55 p.m., with both taking their oaths before Justice Daniel Okungbowa, the state Chief Judge. Afterward, Okpebholo toured the stadium in an open van, greeting supporters who cheered throughout the proceedings.
In his inaugural address, Okpebholo expressed gratitude to the people of Edo for their trust. “Democracy has triumphed again in our dear state,” he declared, emphasizing the humbling nature of the moment.
He promised to prioritize the welfare of the people, with a particular focus on security, infrastructure, and supporting small businesses. Okpebholo’s agenda also includes addressing the state’s poor road conditions, tackling crime, and creating jobs, particularly for youths.

The governor’s victory signals a political shift in Edo State, where APC’s return to power is seen as a response to a fractured alliance between outgoing governor Obaseki and his former deputy, Philip Shuaibu.
Despite accusations from the PDP that the election was marred by irregularities, Okpebholo’s victory represents a significant political comeback for the APC in the South-South region.
Okpebholo’s leadership will be closely watched as he rolls out his five-point agenda, which includes improving security, expanding healthcare, boosting education, and enhancing food sufficiency. He also pledged to support small businesses with soft loans and work to improve the state’s infrastructure. “The welfare of our citizens is a top priority to us,” he affirmed.
As part of his initial moves, Okpebholo appointed key figures to his administration, including Dr. Cyril Adams Oshiomhole as the Commissioner for Health-designate. The appointment of political allies, such as Oshiomhole’s son, signals the consolidation of power within the APC.
Edo State’s political future now hinges on the success of Okpebholo’s reforms. If he delivers on his promises, he could secure a lasting legacy of transformation for the state.
