Former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, has pledged to meet the bail conditions of detained human rights lawyer, Dele Farotimi, in a defamation case. Obi’s move underscores his commitment to justice and respect for the rule of law.
Farotimi, a vocal activist, was granted bail on Friday by an Ekiti Magistrate Court following allegations of defamation by prominent legal icon, Afe Babalola. The case stems from Farotimi’s book, Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System, where he criticised aspects of the justice sector.
The bail terms include a ₦30 million bond, two sureties (one with property ownership), the surrender of his passport, and a ban on media appearances. Obi’s decision to intervene was announced by Tanko Yunusa, his former campaign spokesperson, through a statement on X (formerly Twitter).

“I consulted His Excellency, Peter Obi, as the leader of the Obidient Movement. He offered to take Dele Farotimi on the bail conditions,” Yunusa revealed.
Yunusa added, “Obi’s concern is that the matter be resolved in the best interest of all parties and the integrity of our legal system. He deeply appreciates everyone involved in ensuring fairness.”
Obi’s gesture has drawn widespread attention, highlighting his support for democratic principles and his drive to champion causes that uphold legal integrity.
