Trump Returns as 47th US President, Ends Diversity Programs and LGBTQ Protections

Donald Trump was sworn in as the 47th president of the United States on January 20, 2025, marking an unprecedented political comeback. Speaking at the Capitol Rotunda in Washington, D.C., Trump pledged to dismantle what he termed “woke culture” through immediate executive actions.

“We will restore America’s strength and values with speed and precision,” Trump declared during his inauguration speech. He vowed to prioritize national security, eliminate diversity programs, and impose stricter immigration policies.

In his first act, Trump signed executive orders repealing over 70 Biden-era initiatives, including diversity, equity, and inclusion programs. One order abolished federal recognition of gender identity beyond male and female. “The Biden administration’s policies forced discrimination in the name of equity,” Trump said in a statement.

Sweeping Cultural Changes

Trump’s policy blitz also targets LGBTQ rights. Protections against discrimination in education and healthcare were rescinded, sparking fears among activists. Angel Bullard, a 22-year-old transgender student, described the changes as “deeply painful.” Outside New York’s historic Stonewall Inn, protesters vowed to fight back.

“This rollback is an attack on dignity and equality,” said Jami Taylor, a policy expert from the University of Toledo. Legal challenges are expected to follow, particularly concerning federally funded healthcare programs.

Immigration Clampdown

On immigration, Trump announced a national emergency at the Mexico border. Plans include deploying military personnel and ending birthright citizenship. Officials say the administration aims to deport thousands of undocumented immigrants within weeks.

“This is a historic moment for border security,” said a senior administration official.

Political and Global Reaction

Trump’s inauguration drew high-profile attendees, including tech billionaires Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg. Musk, who donated $250 million to Trump’s campaign, will advise the administration on economic reforms.

International reactions were mixed. Russian President Vladimir Putin welcomed Trump’s return and expressed hopes for “lasting peace” over the Ukraine conflict. In contrast, European leaders voiced concerns over potential shifts in U.S. foreign policy.

The Fight Ahead

Despite the controversies, Trump’s supporters remain fervent. “This is the golden era we’ve been waiting for,” said Barb Fairchild, who traveled from Michigan to witness the ceremony.

However, LGBTQ organizations are bracing for a long battle. “We are facing continued backlash, but our resilience will define the future,” said Aaron Almanza, director of the LGBT National Help Center, which reported a surge in distress calls after the inauguration.

As Trump takes office, the world prepares for a presidency that holds promises of domestic and international disruption.
