University Of Ibadan Shut Down Due To Students’ Protests Over Tuition Hike

The University of Ibadan has been closed for three weeks following a peaceful protest by students over a hike in tuition fees.

The students, who carried placards with inscriptions such as “We Say No Tuition Hikes” and “The Management Is Insensitive To Our Plights,” blocked roads leading to the campus.

In a circular dated August 30, 2024, the institution’s registrar, G. O. Saliu, directed students to vacate the school premises by 2 pm on Saturday, stating that the school will be shut for three weeks.

The closure follows a meeting between the university’s management and the leadership of the student union.

However, the students have resolved to reconvene and resume their peaceful protest until their demands are met.

A statement by the Union of Campus Journalists said, “Students are once again mobilising to resume their protests, which have been ongoing for the past three days… The management’s decision has been met with widespread criticism. Students perceive the break as a ploy to weaken the momentum of their protests against the recent hike in tuition fees.”

The students are demanding a reversal of the tuition hike, which they say is insensitive to their plight. The university’s management has yet to comment on the students’ demands.
