A recent surge in violence has rocked the Indian state of Manipur, where a rocket attack by insurgents claimed the life of a 78-year-old man and injured six others.
The attack, attributed to “Kuki militants,” has led to the closure of schools in the state to ensure the “safety of students and teachers.”
The conflict in Manipur, which began over a year ago, pits the predominantly Hindu Meitei majority against the mainly Christian Kuki community. The dispute revolves around competition for land and public jobs, with rights activists accusing local leaders of exacerbating ethnic divisions for political gain.

The latest attack involved “improvised projectiles” made from galvanized iron pipes attached to explosives, according to an unnamed security source.
This incident follows a recent drone attack that killed a 31-year-old woman and wounded six others, described by police as an “unprecedented attack” by rebels.
The ongoing violence has forced the closure of schools, with a local government notice stating that all schools in the state would be shut to protect students and teachers.
The situation remains tense, with a significant escalation of violence reported in recent days.
