WAEC 2024 Results: 67.55% of Private Candidates Secure Five Credits or More

…exam Malpractice Investigations Leave Nearly 4% in Limbo

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released the 2024 results for private candidates, with 67.55% securing credit and above in at least five subjects.

However, registration for the exam fell by 20% compared to the previous year, highlighting potential shifts in candidate participation.

WAEC’s latest figures show that 65,023 candidates sat for the exam, conducted between October 25 and December 20, 2024, across 5,067 centers nationwide. Among them, 34,878 candidates (53.64%) achieved five credits including English and Mathematics—key subjects for higher education and job opportunities.

“The results reflect both progress and challenges,” said Moyosola F. Adesina, WAEC’s Acting Head of Public Affairs. “While performance has improved, we are monitoring trends in declining registration.”

Special Needs Inclusion

WAEC emphasized its commitment to inclusive education, registering 157 candidates with special needs. Among them, 25 were visually impaired, 13 had hearing impairments, and 15 were Albinos. “Every candidate, regardless of ability, was provided necessary accommodations,” WAEC stated.

Exam Processing and Pending Results

The exam was conducted in two modes: traditional Paper and Pen and a computer-based hybrid model. Marking took place in Lagos, Ibadan, Benin, Enugu, and Kaduna between January 15 and February 4, 2025.

While 95.9% of candidates received their results, 4.1% (2,669 candidates) are awaiting the release of some subjects due to errors in their submissions. WAEC assured that these results are being processed.

Malpractice Concerns and Withheld Results

Exam malpractice remains a concern, with 2,577 candidates (3.96%) having their results withheld pending investigation. WAEC stated that all reported cases, including supporting evidence, are under review. Affected candidates have been advised to check WAEC’s malpractice portal for updates.

Despite the challenges, WAEC’s 2024 results highlight steady performance among private candidates and ongoing efforts to uphold exam integrity.
