ASUU Issues 14- Day Ultimatum To FG To Resolve Crisis In Public Universities

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a stern warning to the Federal Government, giving it 14 days to resolve pressing issues threatening the stability of Nigeria’s public university system.

In a statement released today, ASUU President Emmanuel Osodeke expressed frustration with the government’s apparent lack of commitment and delay tactics. “The government’s inaction is fueling an impending crisis in our public universities,” he emphasized.

ASUU demands the conclusion of the renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement, based on the Nimi Briggs Committee’s Draft Agreement of 2021. Additionally, the union seeks the release of withheld salaries due to the 2022 strike action and payment of outstanding third-party deductions.

Other pressing concerns include funding for university revitalization, implementation of visitation panel reports, reversal of illegal dissolution of governing councils, and adoption of the University Transparency and Accountability Solution.

“The government must seize this opportunity to address these lingering issues,” Osodeke urged. “Failure to do so will leave ASUU no choice but to take industrial action, and we cannot be held responsible for the consequences.”

The union’s resolve to protect the interests of Nigerian academics and students remains unwavering. With the clock ticking, the Federal Government must act swiftly to prevent another disruptive strike.

Will the government meet ASUU’s demands, or will Nigeria’s public universities face another crisis?
