Wike Moves To Address Primary School Teachers Strike, Vows To Pay With IGR Funds

In a bold move to address the ongoing strike by primary school teachers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Minister Nyesom Wike has threatened to utilize 10% of the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) earmarked for Area Councils to pay the striking educators.

Wike’s declaration came during an inspection of the Apo-Karshi Road project on Thursday, where he emphasized his commitment to finding a solution.
“I won’t stand idly by while our children’s education suffers,” Wike stated. “No responsible government would allow teachers to stay home while students bear the brunt.”

The teachers, represented by the FCT Wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, began their strike on September 18, 2024, following a 14-day ultimatum to Area Council Chairmen.

Their demands include the implementation of a 40% Peculiar Allowance and payment of 25 months of Minimum Wage Arrears.
Wike has invited Area Council Chairmen and FCT NUT leaders for discussions, demonstrating his resolve to resolve the impasse.

“It’s unfortunate that teachers are on strike,” Wike acknowledged. “I’ve called a meeting with the Area Council Chairmen and NUT to address this issue.”

Regarding the Apo-Karshi project, Wike expressed cautious optimism about the contractor’s April 2025 completion deadline.
“Although I have doubts, I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt,” he said. “This project is crucial for our community, easing traffic and boosting economic activity.”

As the strike continues, Wike’s intervention offers hope for a swift resolution, ensuring FCT students return to their classrooms soon.
