Nigerian Military Strikes Hard, Kills 481 Terrorists and Captures 741 in October Operations

Nigerian military forces scored significant victories in October, killing 481 terrorists, capturing 741 suspects, and rescuing nearly 500 kidnapped victims, according to the Defence Headquarters (DHQ). The operations, which spanned across multiple regions of the country, also saw the recovery of over 480 weapons and more than 9,000 rounds of ammunition.

In a briefing on Thursday, Director of Defence Media Operations, Edward Buba, provided an in-depth look at the military’s progress. “Our strategy is to dismantle terror groups across the country, weakening their ability to carry out attacks,” Buba said, emphasizing the simultaneous strikes conducted by troops on terrorist hideouts. These operations were supported by precision air strikes from the Nigerian Air Force, significantly reducing the terrorists’ capacity to fight.

The military’s success was most evident in the North-East, where troops of Operation Hadin Kai engaged in synchronized offensives with the Air Force. This operation alone led to the killing of 198 terrorists, the capture of 166 suspects, and the rescue of 156 kidnapped individuals. Furthermore, 257 Boko Haram and ISWAP fighters surrendered, while large stockpiles of arms and ammunition were recovered.

In the North-Central and North-West regions, troops continued to press the offensive. Operation Safe Haven and Whirl Stroke forces eliminated 50 violent extremists, apprehended 202 suspects, and freed 165 hostages. Meanwhile, Operation Hadarin Daji killed 163 terrorists, captured 82 suspects, and rescued 80 hostages. The troops also seized significant amounts of weapons, including 121 AK47 rifles and thousands of rounds of ammunition.

“Even in the midst of mourning the loss of our Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. T.A. Lagbaja, we remain resolute,” Buba stated, honoring the late officer’s dedication and leadership. “We will continue his mission to defeat terrorism and restore peace.”

As the military’s operations progress, the DHQ remains committed to securing the country, ensuring a safer environment for both civilians and economic activities.
