Heavy Shootings Halt PDP Campaign in Edo

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) political campaign in the Central Senatorial District of Edo State was yesterday marred by the shooting of a suspected politician in Ward Seven of the area.

Last Tuesday, the party launched a campaign for all candidates for the 2023 election in the senatorial district.

The gunfire sparked chaos as the Edo State House of Assembly Speaker Marcus Onobun and other PDP leaders fled to safety while others ran for their lives.

A former Commissioner for Lands and Survey in the state and a leader of PDP loyal to the governor of the state, Godwin Obaseki, Anslem Ojezua, flanked by other party leaders, said in a video clip about the incident, saying that the police investigation has begun to reveal the perpetrators of the attack.

He said: “We stopped our campaign today because today should be the last place where the campaign is held in Esan Central. We are in Ward 7 and it is very peaceful.

“When we heard gunshots during the meeting and to avoid injury and damage and loss of life, we decided to evacuate immediately.

“We later got to hear that they were possible loss of lives. It was only wise and sensitive to suspend our campaign until when we are sure of what transpired.

“We are reliably informed that the police are handling the situation and as soon as they give us positive information, we can continue with our campaign.”
