Again, East Africa Experiences Internet Disruption Due to Sub-sea Cable Faults

Internet services in various East African countries have been disrupted owing to reported faults in the East African Submarine Cable System (EASSy) and SEACOM cables, as revealed by internet monitoring entities.

Also, NetBlocks issued a statement via X, formerly Twitter, detailing the internet connectivity issues in multiple nations, with Tanzania and Mayotte seeing significant impacts, while Mozambique and Malawi are moderately affected.

Cloudflare further confirmed the interruptions in regions including Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, and Madagascar.

Notably, Kenya’s leading telecoms operator, Safaricom, has implemented contingency measures aiming to maintain services despite slower speeds being anticipated until the cables’ complete restoration.

This recent disruption echoes past incidents experienced in March, where West African countries and South Africa faced internet outages due to damages to key sub-sea cables.

The cost of repair for the affected digital infrastructure has been projected to be substantial, with estimates of up to $8 million cited by the CEO of West Indian Ocean Cable Company, Chris Wood, for the full restoration of four major cables.
