OUTBREAK: Nigeria Employs Community Efforts to Combat Meningitis Outbreak

Nigeria confronts another wave of cerebrospinal meningitis (CSM) strain C, with an emphasis on both medical intervention and essential community involvement to prevent further spread of the disease.

Working in conjunction with the WHO and the Yobe State Government, local leaders have been mobilized to boost awareness and promote preventive measures within the community.

The collaborative campaign aims to battle the rise in meningitis cases which have claimed at least 84 lives in Yobe state by the 15th week of 2024.

WHO’s partnership, funded by the USAID/BHA, spearheaded stakeholder involvement encompassing religious and traditional leaders across affected LGAs.

Hakimi Mai Hassan, Emirate Focal Person, commends this high-level community engagement, confirming the effectiveness of incorporating local customs and leadership into the response initiative.

Mr. Abdullahi Danchuwa, representing the Yobe State Health Commissioner, also praised the WHO’s leadership in strengthening community engagement as a strategy to halt the outbreak.

In addition to engaging communities, the WHO has also enhanced the capabilities of healthcare workers, strengthened surveillance systems, and facilitated active case search teams to increase meningitis awareness and early reporting.

With WHO’s continuous support, the methodology and effectiveness of community engagement are being refined to ensure inclusivity and protection for the most vulnerable, reaffirming their commitment to leading health responses even in the face of sustained humanitarian crises.
