Court Fines Police For Arresting And Detaining Traditional Ruler

The Port Harcourt High Court, under the direction of Justice Awuma Oriye, has ruled against the police for the wrongful arrest and prolonged detention of Eze Ekpeye Logbo, Kelvin Anugwo, the erstwhile traditional ruler of Ekpeye. The court ordered the police to pay Anugwo a compensation of N3 million.

Anugwo’s illegal detention began on September 10, 2023, and lasted 82 days, following his arrest in connection with the murder of SP Bako Angbashim.

In the judgment, Justice Oriye not only awarded monetary compensation but also instructed the police to extend a public apology to Anugwo by publishing it in a national newspaper, acknowledging the infringement of his fundamental human rights.

Furthermore, an injunction was granted to prohibit the police from future arrests, threats, or intimidation towards Anugwo concerning Angbashim’s death. An additional sum of N200,000 was awarded to the traditional ruler for damages.

In conclusion, Ikashi Emehi, the legal representative for Eze Ekpeye Logbo, spoke to the press post-judgment and hailed the decision as a triumph for the Ekpeye community, urging them to stay strong in the face of adversity.
