Nigeria Set To Open Advanced 1.4 Petabyte Data Centre This May

In a technological leap for Nigeria, the government announces its initiative to inaugurate an advanced data centre with a remarkable capacity of 1.4 petabytes. This facility is set to secure critical national data, encompassing the biometric information of its citizens.

Minister of the Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, shared this development while hosting members of the National Union of Nigerian Associations in Italy (NUNAI), led by President Chief Rowland Ndukuba.

Projected to launch before the 29th of May, 2024, the data centre’s commencement is aligned with the events marking President Tinubu’s first year in office.

The Minister emphasized the integral role of technology and innovation in resolving present-day challenges and in enhancing efficiency and transparency within governmental operations.

Chief Ndukuba acknowledged the Ministry’s initiatives in tackling issues affecting Nigerians abroad, specifically in Italy, and highlighted the potential benefits that heightened cooperation could bring.

With more than 11 data centres as of 2023, most situated in pivotal cities like Lagos, Abuja, and Kano, Nigeria is expanding its digital infrastructure footprint. Facilities like the Open Access Data Centre (OADC), Rack Centre, MDXi, Medallion (Digital Reality), and several others contribute to this burgeoning sector.

In conclusion, Having attracted investments surpassing $230 million, forecasts suggest that Nigeria’s data centre market could escalate to a valuation of $415 million by the year 2028.
