NGOs Train Abuja Widows On Skills

In an effort to support and empower widows in Abuja, two Non-Governmental Organisations, the Rasaq Okulaja Empowerment Initiative and the Helpline Social Support Initiative, have provided sixty widows with the skills necessary for self-reliance in a progressive memorial empowerment and exhibition programme.

The widows gained practical knowledge in areas such as tie and dye, soap making, turban creation, and snack production. This initiative, which commemorates the second anniversary of the late Rev. Rasaq Okulaja’s passing, aims to reduce poverty levels among this vulnerable demographic.

Dr. Jumai Ahmadu, leading the Helpline Social Support Initiative, urged the beneficiaries to organize themselves into cooperative groups to facilitate mutual resource sharing, easier access to financial aid, and the hosting of training sessions for other groups facing vulnerability.

She highlighted the significance of effective product packaging, savvy marketing strategies, and obtaining formal business registration through the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC).

Mrs. Toyin Okulaja, the widow of the late Rev. Okulaja, honoured her husband’s enduring legacy, which was characterized by his positive contributions to the community. She discussed the intent behind the empowerment efforts, to perpetuate her husband’s charitable work, continuing to make meaningful differences in the lives of people in need.

In 2023, the initiative had supported 50 women and adolescent girls by providing them with various skills, and those women showcased their craftsmanship at the current event. This year’s programme centered particularly on widows, offering them not only training but also essential food items and some financial help to better navigate their challenging circumstances.

Success stories flowed from the participants, who expressed deep gratitude for the newfound ability to contribute more substantially to the welfare of their families, and to further their educational pursuits. The initiative underscores an important step towards economic independence for widows in the region, demonstrating impactful community-driven support.
