Nigerian – US Based Boxer Killed In Maryland Shooting

In a sorrowful turn of events, Isaiah Oludayo Olugbemi, a Nigerian-born boxer with aspirations of turning professional by the end of the year, was fatally shot multiple times in Maryland, USA. The Anne Arundel County Police Department confirmed the tragic incident, stating that Olugbemi was found with gunshot wounds near Meadowmist Way and Stehlik Drive, and was pronounced dead upon arrival at Shock Trauma in Baltimore.

The 27-year-old athlete, who had made significant strides in the world of boxing, including winning the national Golden Gloves Championship within three years of training at a gym in Anne Arundel County, was remembered by gym owner Christen Jeter as having shown “remarkable progress” and described his death as “devastating”.

Nicholas Francis Xavier Giroux, 36, has been charged with first- and second-degree murder in connection with the senseless killing of Olugbemi. Authorities suggest that the shooting was targeted, with surveillance footage capturing Giroux approaching Olugbemi with a handgun, discharging multiple shots, and fleeing the scene on foot.

According to statements from Olugbemi’s brother, Abraham, Giroux, reportedly a neighbor, had previously threatened Olugbemi with a gun on several occasions earlier this year, though no charges were filed in those instances, as per Maryland court records.

Despite the heartbreaking circumstances of his passing, Olugbemi’s recent accomplishments in the ring, including a victory in an amateur fight following his National Golden Gloves win in Washington D.C. in May, serve as a testament to his talent and potential. Known as a mentor and leader within his gym community, Olugbemi inspired many young athletes and was deeply admired by friends for his dedication and achievements.

The local police are now appealing to residents with private surveillance or doorbell cameras to come forward with any footage that may assist in the ongoing investigation into this tragic event. The loss of Isaiah Olugbemi not only marks a significant blow to the aspiring athlete’s community and loved ones but to the sporting world in which he had begun to make his mark.
