In a bid to set the record straight, the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) has released a detailed breakdown of the monthly earnings of Nigerian senators, debunking recent claims made by former Senator Shehu Sani. According to RMAFC Chairman, M.B.
Shehu, each of the 109 senators receives a monthly salary of ₦1,063,860, a far cry from Sani’s assertion of a ₦13.5 million monthly running cost.
The RMAFC’s clarification comes amidst growing public interest in the remuneration of public officials, with many Nigerians calling for greater transparency and accountability.
By releasing the detailed breakdown of senators’ earnings, RMAFC aims to promote a better understanding of the compensation package for Nigeria’s lawmakers.
The monthly salary of ₦1,063,860 is comprised of various allowances, including a basic salary of ₦168,866.70, Motor Vehicle Fuelling and Maintenance Allowance of ₦126,650.00, and a Personal Assistant allowance of ₦42,216.66.

Senators also receive a Domestic Staff allowance of ₦126,650.00, Entertainment allowance of ₦50,660.00, and Utilities allowance of ₦50,660.00.
Furthermore, senators receive a Newspapers/Periodicals allowance of ₦25,330.00, Wardrobe allowance of ₦42,216.66, and House Maintenance allowance of ₦8,443.33.
The Constituency Allowance of ₦422,166.66 is also paid monthly, bringing the total monthly earnings to ₦1,063,860.
In addition to these regular allowances, senators are also entitled to non-regular allowances, including a Furniture Allowance of ₦6,079,200 and Severance Gratuity of ₦6,079,200, both paid once per tenure.
The vehicle allowance of ₦8,105,600 is an optional loan that must be repaid before leaving office.
RMAFC also took the opportunity to clarify that, except for the president, vice president, senate president, and speaker of the House of Representatives, no public or legislative officers receive government-provided housing, a benefit that has been discontinued.
By providing this detailed breakdown, RMAFC aims to promote transparency and accountability in the remuneration of public officials, ensuring that Nigerians are well-informed about the compensation package for their lawmakers.
