UNILAG Faces Blackout Due To 300M Electricity Debt

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has been plunged into darkness after Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) disconnected its power supply due to an unpaid debt of N300 million. The university’s management is working to resolve the issue, but the sudden loss of power has left students and staff scrambling.

The debt accumulated after EKEDC reclassified the university’s tariff category, resulting in a significant increase in monthly electricity bills.

Despite efforts to manage the burden, the university was unable to meet the new financial demands.

“We are working tirelessly to resolve the issue with EKEDC and restore power to the campus,” said a university spokesperson.

“We understand the inconvenience this has caused and appreciate the patience and understanding of our students and staff.”

The disconnection highlights the challenges faced by educational institutions in managing their electricity costs and the need for sustainable solutions to ensure uninterrupted power supply.

As the university works to resolve the issue, students and staff are finding ways to adapt to the sudden loss of power.
