Only one in five applicants for Nigeria’s zero-interest education loan scheme is female, according to new data from the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND). The organization is now urging more women to take advantage of the opportunity.
The figures were revealed at the NELFUND Women Forum Programme in Abuja, held in celebration of International Women’s Day 2025. Managing Director Akintunde Sawyerr, represented by Ms. Oluwatosin Sanusi, described the trend as concerning. “Currently, for every four male applicants, there is just one female. That’s not impressive,” he said.
The federal student loan, designed to support tuition and living expenses, was launched to ease financial burdens for students in government-owned universities and polytechnics. However, women are significantly underrepresented in the scheme.
Financial Aid and Skills Training for Students
Beyond tuition support, NELFUND also provides skills acquisition programs, equipping students with entrepreneurship training and essential tools for self-sufficiency. Participants receive stipends while learning practical skills to prepare for the job market.

Despite these benefits, female participation remains low. “We have fewer women taking advantage of this initiative, and we need to change that,” Sawyerr emphasized. He added that raising awareness is critical to closing the gender gap in applications.
To boost participation, NELFUND is working with female student associations, advocacy groups, and government agencies. Awareness campaigns are set to roll out nationwide, encouraging more women to apply for financial aid and skills training.
Government Push for Gender Equity in Education
The Minister of State for Education, Dr. Suwaiba Ahmed, praised government efforts to ensure gender-balanced access to education. Represented by Dr. Mufida Hussain, she urged female students to seize the opportunity and apply for the loan.
“Financial constraints should not hinder girls’ education. We must take bold steps to break these barriers,” Ahmed stated.
Ms. Choice Enebeli, National President of Female Students of Nigeria, committed to championing awareness campaigns across the country. “Women’s rights are human rights. We must strive for equal access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities,” she said.
Mrs. Chioma Nweze, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Community Engagement, called on female students to be proactive. “Opportunities don’t wait. Women must step forward and claim what is available,” she urged.
