Kogi Secures $500M World Bank Support to Boost Education, Healthcare

Kogi State is set to receive a $500 million lifeline from the World Bank to strengthen its education and healthcare sectors, a move expected to transform lives and drive economic growth.

The funding comes under the HOPE-GOV initiative, which focuses on expanding access to quality healthcare and basic education. Speaking at a citizens’ sensitization program in Lokoja, Asiwaju Idris, Kogi’s Commissioner for Finance, Budget, and Economic Planning, said the funds would enhance service delivery, workforce development, and infrastructure in these key sectors.

“This initiative will improve access to quality education and healthcare, laying the foundation for a more productive and resilient society,” Idris said.

Greater Transparency and Stronger Workforce

Beyond funding, the HOPE-GOV initiative will strengthen fiscal transparency and accountability in Kogi. Dr. Habibat Tijani, the state’s Accountant-General and World Bank Fiscal Focal Person, emphasized that the program will ensure budget credibility and responsible fund management.

The initiative will also boost teacher and healthcare worker recruitment, ensuring that classrooms and clinics across the state are well-staffed and efficient. “This funding is not just about infrastructure—it’s about human capital development, which is key to sustainable progress,” Tijani added.

Government’s Commitment to Lasting Reforms

Kogi’s leadership is already making strides in education reform. Commissioner for Education, Wemi Jones, revealed that the state has allocated ₦1.2 billion to cover examination fees for students in public schools, ensuring more children stay in school.

Similarly, Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abdulazeez Adams, highlighted how the HOPE-GOV initiative would revolutionize healthcare delivery, making essential medical services more accessible across the state.

The HOPE-GOV program, a federal initiative, aligns with Nigeria’s broader goals under the Universal Basic Education (UBE) roadmap (2021–2030) and the 2024–2028 National Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative.
