Nigeria Absent From Prestigious Top 1000 In Global University Rankings

The latest edition of the global universities ranking for 2025, conducted by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), has been unveiled, spotlighting over 1,500 universities from 105 different higher education systems worldwide.

In a disappointing turn for Nigerian academia, not a single Nigerian institution features within the esteemed top 1000 bracket. Both the University of Ibadan (UI) and the University of Lagos (UNILAG) were positioned in the 1100-1200 range, emphasizing a significant gap in global representation.

The list is dominated by the United States, boasting 197 ranked institutions, closely followed by the United Kingdom with 90 entries, and China securing third place with 71 entries.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) continues its reign at the summit, marking its 13th consecutive year as the number one, with Imperial College London, the University of Oxford, Harvard University, and the University of Cambridge trailing closely behind.

QS employs criteria such as academic reputation, excellence, and international diversity in its evaluation process, suggesting an imperative call for Nigerian universities to bolster their global competitiveness and presence.
