Nigeria’s Women Basketball Coach Becomes Best Female Coach At 2024 Olympics

In a groundbreaking achievement, Rena Wakama, the head coach of Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, has been recognized as the Best Female Basketball Coach at the Paris 2024 Olympics tournament.

This prestigious honor was announced by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) on Sunday evening.

Wakama’s remarkable leadership guided D’Tigress to their first-ever quarterfinals appearance in the Olympic games, where they defeated Canada 79-70.

Although their journey was cut short by the eventual winners, the United States, Wakama’s team made history as the only African basketball team to progress to the last 16.

The 32-year-old coach has already etched her name in Nigerian female basketball history, becoming the first national female team coach to win the women’s Afrobasket title since its inception in 1966.

Under her guidance, D’Tigress secured Nigeria’s fourth consecutive title, defeating Senegal 84-74 in the final.

Wakama’s accolades are a testament to her dedication and expertise, inspiring a new generation of female basketball players in Nigeria.

Her achievement serves as a shining example of excellence in sports coaching, and her name will be remembered as a trailblazer in Nigerian basketball history.
