Uganda Airlines to resume direct flights to Rwanda capital Kigali

Uganda Airlines will resume direct flights to Rwandan capital Kigali for the first time since a 2019 revamp, officials have announced.

The developments followed several engagements regarding the matter between officials from both sides.

Ugandan Foreign Affairs Minister Jeje Odongo made the announcement at the end of the two-day 11th session of the Rwanda-Uganda Joint Standing Commission (JPC) in Kigali on Friday.

According to Mr. Odongo, the move aims to overcome the transportation challenges facing the business community on both sides, increase trade, increase connectivity and help strengthen people-to-people exchanges.

“Uganda welcomes the acceptance of the designation of our national carrier Uganda Airlines by the Rwanda authorities, which will lead to its commencing of direct flights from their hub in Entebbe to Kigali,” he said in a statement.

Uganda Airlines resumed commercial flights in 2019, mostly targeting regional destinations, but the airline’s attempts to secure landing rights at Kigali were unsuccessful, largely due to a diplomatic rift.
