US Senator Found Guilty Of Corruption Charges

In a shocking verdict, US Senator Bob Menendez has been convicted on all counts in a corruption trial, marking a stunning downfall for the Democrat.

The jury found Menendez guilty of 16 crimes, including bribery, extortion, honest services fraud, obstruction of justice, and conspiracy, after three days of deliberation.

According to prosecutors, Menendez misused his position to shield allies from criminal inquiries and benefit associates, including his wife.

He allegedly received bribes in the form of gold and cash from three New Jersey businessmen and acted as an agent for the Egyptian government.

Menendez’s actions involved meetings with Egyptian intelligence officials and altering his stance toward the country to expedite its access to millions of dollars in US military aid.

Menendez, 70, maintained his innocence, claiming, “I have never violated my public oath. I have never been anything but a patriot of my country and for my country. I have never been a foreign agent.” He vowed to appeal the verdict as he left the courthouse.

The investigation leading to Menendez’s conviction was thorough, involving an FBI raid on his home in June 2022.

Agents confiscated nearly $150,000 worth of gold bars and almost $500,000 in cash concealed in unusual places, including boots, shoeboxes, and jackets.

Following the verdict, top Democrats, including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and New Jersey Senator Corey Booker, have called on Menendez to resign.

Menendez’s wife, Nadine, who was also charged but pleaded not guilty, is scheduled to face trial after recovering from breast cancer surgery.
