Usmanu Danfodiyo University Mourns Slain Deputy VC

Tragedy struck Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto (UDUS) as the institution mourns the loss of Professor Yusuf Saidu, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Research, Innovation, and Development, who was fatally attacked by suspected bandits. The incident occurred while Saidu was en route from Sokoto to Kaduna, as confirmed by the university authorities.

In a solemn statement, the university expressed deep sorrow over the untimely demise of Saidu, emphasizing the significant impact of his death on the academic community. The institution lauded his integrity, dedication, and bravery, underscoring the profound loss experienced by all members of the university and the broader academic sphere.

The statement honoring Saidu’s memory read, “It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Prof. Yusuf Saidu, the esteemed Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Research, Innovation, and Development at Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto. He was tragically attacked and killed by bandits during his journey from Sokoto to Kaduna. A man of unwavering integrity, commitment, and valor.”

As a distinguished professor specializing in nutritional biochemistry, Saidu’s academic journey was marked by excellence. Graduating as the top student in biochemistry from UDUS in 1990, he went on to achieve a master’s degree with distinction from the University of Jos in 1994, and later obtained his PhD from UDUS in 2005.

The Northwest Governors Forum initiated the inaugural Peace and Security Summit in Sokoto state on the same day as the tragic incident, underscoring the ongoing efforts to address regional peace and security challenges.
